QT Port Douglas, North Queensland

It feels a little as though I've stepped into a Dean Martin movie.  All I need is a silver pole and 'Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime' on the speakers and the scene at QT Port Douglas is complete.

What better companion to explore the wonders of Port Douglas than super party boy Dean Martin, a man who really knew how to have a good time?  So put Dean, or Don Draper from Mad Men in your pocket, add a dash of Hamptons white beach-side ambiance and you've got the feel of this hotel.

It's a sprawling complex and getting to my room involves walking past the lagoon-style pool, through the tropical gardens, over large ponds and up a flight of stairs winding around corridors until my destination is reached.

This is the first room I’ve stayed in where you can buy everything from the bed and lamps to the coat hangers. The slick kit out has obviously attracted the attention of visitors and they want to recreate the look at home but the beds also are a big seller across the group. Sinking into the plush surface after a day of swimming on the reef, there’s no doubt in my mind that I would love one of these at home too.

Rooms are very spick and span with lively retro beach décor that fits the Port Douglas vibe. Designed for practicality as much as comfort and with the addition of an extra room would easily suit a family.

Breakfast buffet in Bazaar is extensive starting with a wide selection of juices and a chef on hand to turn out your eggs just the way you like them.

You may remember this resort from one of it's previous incarnations as it's been a Rydges property for many years. The renovation has left little of the original hotel and it's all very spick 'n span.

The facts -

My room: 2010 - Suite with queen-sized bed, separate lounge, kitchenette and dining table, bathroom with toilet, shower over bath which is also a spa, laundry cupboard with washer and dryer.

Likes: Great range of bathroom products – shampoo and conditioner I would consider purchasing. Funky décor. Two balconies. Flat screen TVs.

Dislikes: No bathrobes, hairdryer just adequate, no mirrors for hair and makeup outside the bathroom, lighting over the bathroom mirror very basic. Grounds need a little TLC.

Bottom line: In low season you may be able to pick up a room here for $159 a night but the rack rate is $360.
